Stress and Trauma are unfortunately a part of all our lives — and even more so for our dogs. They can’t tell us when they’re struggling, and even the most loving guardians may not always recognize the signs of stress or anxiety. Dogs are incredibly skilled at masking discomfort, especially to the untrained eye, which can lead to unseen distress. Sometimes, even with a clean bill of health, it becomes clear that our beloved companions are anxious, overwhelmed, or struggling, and in need of support.
Some dogs experience the world more intensely than others. They notice subtleties, feel emotions deeply, and may become easily stressed or overwhelmed. These sensitive dogs aren’t difficult — they’re simply more aware of their surroundings and their emotions. With the right understanding and support, sensitive dogs can thrive, feel safe, and develop confidence in their daily lives.
As someone with extensive experience helping anxious, reactive, and stressed dogs, I am passionate about supporting sensitive dogs and their guardians. With a combination of insight, gentle guidance, and specialized strategies, I help these dogs navigate their emotions and build a life where they feel secure, understood, and empowered.
Sensitivity matters because Sensitive Dogs often need more emotional support, consistency, time and patience. Misunderstanding their needs can lead to stress-based behaviour challenges.
The simple answer is yes I do!
Dogs who are labeled as “reactive” are increasingly common today. While the term is widely recognized, it focuses on outward behaviour rather than the underlying cause. Many reactive behaviours are fear-based, but fear is not the only factor. Reactivity can also arise from other emotions, physical discomfort, past negative experiences, or even a combination of these.
I approach reactivity by looking beyond the behaviour and focusing on what the individual dog is truly experiencing in the moment. Each dog has a unique emotional world, and understanding that world is key to helping them feel safe, secure, and confident. From this understanding, I develop a compassionate, individualized plan to address the root cause of the reactivity — guiding your dog to process and release the negative emotion rather than simply suppressing the behaviour.
The goal isn’t just calmer walks or fewer outbursts — it’s helping your dog truly feel safe, understood, and empowered in their daily life. This approach strengthens the bond between you and your companion, creating a sense of trust, stability, and harmony. My work doesn’t suppress your dog’s feelings and call it obedience; it transforms their outlook, fostering long-term positive change.
Rather than traditional “training,” think of it as therapy: educated, thoughtful, and tailored to the needs of your sensitive dog. Gentle, yet effective, every step is designed to nurture their confidence, honour their feelings, and help them navigate the world with greater ease and happiness.
Reactivity literally means responding to something.
Some dogs experience the world more intensely than others. They notice subtleties, feel emotions deeply, and can become easily stressed or overwhelmed. Sensitivity is not a flaw — it’s a natural trait that makes these dogs highly aware, intuitive, and responsive to their environment.
Being sensitive can also look different for each dog. No matter what, it doesn’t mean a dog is difficult or disobedient. It means they process experiences more intensely, which can sometimes show up as anxiety, caution, or even over-excitement.
With the right support, sensitive dogs can learn to navigate the world confidently, building strong bonds with their guardians along the way.
Key traits of sensitive dogs may include:
Reacting strongly to changes in the environment or routine
Being highly attuned to human emotions and body language
Overstimulation from sights, sounds, or social interactions
A need for longer time to adjust to new experiences
Strong emotional responses, both positive and negative
Supporting a sensitive dog isn’t about changing who they are at their core. Rather, it’s about understanding, nurturing, and providing tools to help them thrive. This is where my S.E.R.E.N.E.™ approach can make a profound difference, helping dogs feel safe, understood, and empowered in every part of their lives.
Trauma can leave lasting effects on a dog’s behaviour, emotions, and overall wellbeing. Just like humans, dogs who have experienced painful, frightening, or overwhelming events may carry the impact long after the event has passed. This can show up as anxiety, fear, heightened sensitivity, odd behaviours and reactivity — even when their environment is safe and loving.
It’s important to remember: trauma is not a reflection of a dog’s lack of training. It is a natural response to experiences that challenged their sense of safety and trust. Sensitive dogs, in particular, may be more profoundly affected, as their heightened awareness can make stressful events feel even more intense.
Healing from trauma is a gradual, gentle process. It requires understanding the individual dog’s experiences, providing safety, and using compassion-based support to rebuild trust and confidence. This is where my S.E.R.E.N.E.™ approach truly shines: by focusing on Safety, Empathy, Regulation, Exploration, Nurture, and Empowerment, we create a structured, nurturing environment where dogs can heal, regain balance, and flourish.
Every dog’s journey through trauma is unique. With patience, support, and guidance, even deeply impacted dogs can feel safe, understood, and empowered to enjoy life fully. Helping dogs like this is one of my specialties.
Going beyond Private Training
Previously, I used the Canine Emotional Detox (CED), created by Diane Garrod — a Guild Certified Tellington TTouch® Practitioner, behaviour consultant, canine trainer-teacher-coach, and owner of Canine Transformations in Washington State. The CED is a short but focused routine designed to help dogs decompress and release stress. It’s particularly effective for helping anxious or stressed dogs reach a state where they can comfortably recover and participate in a behavioural support program if needed.
The Serenity Reset is an expansion of Diane’s fantastic program. It is a calm, structured, and compassionate program designed to help your dog decompress, release built-up stress, and reconnect with a sense of calm and harmony.
Much like the CED, the Serenity Reset helps dogs reach a state where they feel safe, secure, and emotionally ready to engage with their environment — and with you — in a positive, confident way. By addressing stress at its root, this program supports your dog’s emotional wellbeing, strengthens your bond, and sets the stage for long-term growth, resilience, and joy.
Chronic stress can deeply affect a dog’s ability to think clearly, regulate emotions, and enjoy daily life. When stress accumulates over time, it may influence behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and even the relationship you share with your dog. Releasing stress is vital for a dog’s ability to cope with everyday life — to think through choices, make calm decisions, and reconnect with their guardian when the bond has been strained by behavioural challenges. Simply put, the Serenity Reset supports change from the inside out.
When a dog begins to feel better internally — throughout both body and mind — outward behaviour can shift naturally. As stress releases, feel-good chemicals such as oxytocin and serotonin are supported, helping the nervous system move toward calm, connection, and healthy emotional harmony.
The Serenity Reset is designed to gently release this built-up tension and restore emotional balance. By supporting your dog internally, we encourage:
A calmer, more relaxed and positive outlook
Improved confidence and coping with everyday challenges
A strengthened sense of trust and connection between you and your dog
Emotional harmony that naturally supports positive behaviour
The Serenity Reset is a one-week, guided emotional reset, thoughtfully designed to fit into real life for both dogs and their guardians. The program typically begins on a weekend, allowing for a gentle, supported start when guardians often have more flexibility to focus on decompression, connection, and calm. The remaining days are structured to integrate smoothly into weekday routines, including work and family life. When possible, completing the Reset during time off is encouraged, as it can enhance the overall effectiveness — though this is never a requirement.
This slower, more spacious timeline allows sensitive dogs to:
Gradually release accumulated stress
Settle into a sense of safety and predictability
Integrate calming, supportive routines into everyday life
Rather than an intense or overwhelming intervention, the Serenity Reset is a nurturing, guided process — one that respects your dog’s emotional capacity and supports meaningful, lasting change. Every Reset is fully customized, and pacing may be carefully adjusted based on your dog’s individual needs.
The Serenity Reset is tailored to your dog’s unique personality, history, and emotional landscape.
Through a combination of carefully selected routines, calming enrichment, guided relaxation, and supportive strategies, the Reset helps your dog release stress in a way that feels safe, respectful, and empowering.
Unlike more intensive intervention programs, the focus is always on creating a calm, structured environment where your dog feels supported — never pushed beyond what they can comfortably handle.
The Serenity Reset may be especially helpful for dogs who:
Experience ongoing stress or anxiety
Display repeated high-arousal behaviours (such as excessive licking, obsessive routines, or a bite history)
Show reactivity toward people, dogs, or their environment
Struggle with separation anxiety, noise sensitivity, or situational fears
Have a history of trauma or heightened emotional sensitivity
Every dog’s journey is unique. The Serenity Reset meets your dog exactly where they are, offering gentle, compassionate support to help them feel safe, understood, and more at ease — restoring calm, confidence, and joy in daily life.
I believe in being transparent and respectful of your time, trust, and resources. The Serenity Reset is a one-week, guided, fully customized emotional support program, and the base pricing reflects the level of individualized care, planning, and ongoing professional guidance involved.
Serenity Reset base pricing: $700 CAD
This includes:
Review of your dog’s intake and history
A fully customized Serenity Reset plan
Analysis of submitted samples (as applicable)
Guidance and professional support throughout the week
Thoughtful adjustments based on your dog’s responses
and much more
Pricing may vary slightly for individual or especially complex cases. Exact pricing will always be discussed and confirmed after reviewing your intake form, to ensure the program is appropriate and supportive for your dog’s needs. If additional support or follow-up sessions are recommended, this will always be communicated clearly ahead of time.
If you feel your dog may benefit from a Serenity Reset, the next step is to complete the Serenity Reset Intake Form using the button below.
